This talk will explore some of the connections between the historical development of botany and evolution. Alongside the acceptance of evolution by most botanists since Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (1859), other botanists protested against making hasty conclusions. We will cover both advocates and critics of evolution within botany as the discipline as a whole developed. At the same time, we will get a sense of the history of evolution more generally within biology in the 19th and 20th centuries.
