Completed in 2001, the Foothills Grove is an arena-shaped grass outdoor classroom surrounded by beautiful trees. This Outdoor Classroom was established in honor of a long-time Treasure Valley garden guru, Don Dick, who passed away in February 2000. Don started a weekly radio program on KIDO, which ran from 1971-1976 and again from 1987-1999, earning him the proud name “Dr. Dirt.” For many years he was part-owner of the Union Farm and Garden Centers. He was extremely fond of the area where the Outdoor Classroom is now located, where he savored the panoramas of the valley below, the river winding through the city, and the scenic view of the Owyhee Mountains.
