Opera Idaho Presents:
The King and I in Concert
by Rodgers & Hammerstein
Friday, August 15, 2014 • 7:30pm
Continuing a now five-year summer tradition of presenting Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals outdoors and in-concert, Opera Idaho turns to the fifth collaboration by the famous team composer and dramatist team. It is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical’s plot relates the experiences of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the King’s drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the piece, as well as by a love that neither can admit. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1951 and ran nearly three years, then the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history, and has had many tours and revivals.
Boise baritone Jason Detwiler stars as The King of Siam, the role made famous by Yul Brynner on stage and screen. Jason’s wife Michele portrays Anna.

The lawn at the venue will be divided into Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 will be the section closer to the stage and Tier 2 further back… though exact size of the tiered sections is dependent on the number of tickets sold.
We are outdoors, so think of it as a picnic. You may bring your own food and drink, or purchase from one of our vendors. We encourage you to bring blankets and low-backed lawn chairs with seats no higher than 6 inches from the ground.
It is open seating within your section. However be aware if you bring tall chairs, you will be asked to move towards the sides of the section so that you will not be blocking the view of people seated behind you.
Please refrain from bringing cameras and recording equipment of any kind.
